Well, I had made a couple batches with the Crisco at 20% and 23%, those turned out great! My newest batch I used the Crisco at 30% and it looked like oil was seeping out of it when I unmolded it 5 weeks ago but I was hoping it would absorb back in. I checked it this morning and it has beads of oil all over it and the top is kind of mushy!! Yech! There is no zap, it is just very weepy. I am wondering if I should rebatch it - will that incorporate the oils or will it still weep as that does not change the recipe? Here is the recipe:
Beeswax 1%
Castor 5.5%
Coconut 25%
Crisco w/palm 30%
Tallow Manteca 5%
Olive 33.5%

Total of 56 oz of oils
Lye 7.7 oz
Water 21.3 oz

Fragrance 2.4

Can this be rebatched or shredded to use mixed into a soap batter to make a confetti-like look? or should it be thrown out? (Such a sad thing to do!!!)

Thank you for any help!!

Sherri

Is it possible that your olive oil is adulterated? Did the soap gel? Is your scale accurate? Did you use a soap safe fragrance?

My olive oil is the same oil I've used many times. I buy it from Costco, it is Montolivo Extra Light Olive oil. I've made many batches with this oil and have never had this problem. It did a full gel. I also stirred in 1 1/2 tsp of orange peel powder into the batter at trace. I used a fragrance oil (Southern Peach) from Brambleberry for soaping. I was thinking perhaps I used too much Crisco at 30%. I made some in a 5lb mold and some in a two lb. Both batches are weeping!!

It doesn't sound like you have a lot of unincorporated oil, just some weeping? And it' doesn't zap? I'd wouldn't do either. I'd like it sit and cure. Wash your hands wiath it at 6 weeks and see how it feels.

Yes, my super fat was 7% and I did run it through Soapcalc, so I don't know what happened. I'll try posting a picture later on! So, maybe it is okay to use? Saturday will be the 6 week cure date. I hadn't actually tried it yet, maybe it's fine! I was just surprised to see oil dripping down the cut sides of it!

You may not have done anything wrong - sometimes weeping just happens. It might be the FO you used, or perhaps there was high humidity in your soaping area.

What type of water did you use? I accidentally picked up a gallon of purified water one time instead of distilled water which resulted in weepy, softer soap. I didn't figure out why it happened until I went to make my next batch and saw the label on the water.

Anyway, I'd also let it sit longer and see if it dries out. The soap I had eventually got harder, but it still has an oily feel to the outside of it. When I tried a small piece in the shower it was fine to use.

I think weeping can also happen if you use too much fragrance oil.

Thank you for your replies! Here is a picture so you can see what I'm talking about!!

http://s1165.photobucket.com/user/momso ... g.html?o=0

The bar on the right has a big 'ol droplet on the very bottom and besides the small droplets there are some that even run down!! There is a little ash on the tops of the bars and in some places very soft places.

I used Southern Peach fragrance oil from Brambleberry. I used 2 oz. which is little less than a .6 Ratio for fragrance.

My question, other than is this soap okay to use, is whether or not I used too high a percentage of Crisco w/ palm. I had never used 30% before and I wondered if that was the culprit! What do you think? What is an okay rate for Crisco? Can Crisco leave DOS? I am also wondering if I should just go back to straight Palm oil - I was trying to save a little money but if it doesn't make a good a soap I don't think it's worth it!

Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't use Crisco. It does have palm, but it also has other ingredients and since I don't know the exact % of each, it's hard to calculate the exact SAP value for this ingredient.

I don't use Crisco in my recipes now but I did try it once when I was first starting and didn't have any palm oil on hand. I keep all my recipes so I looked up what percent it was, and it was 30 percent. My Crisco soap didn't sweat at all that I can recall, and I think it did make a nice hard soap.

Your sweaty soap looks just like the one I made with the purified water, which I think still has some minerals in it, vs distilled water. Maybe something you used was adulterated somehow?

Anyway, it's a pretty soap, love the mica line!

Thanks, GoodCleanFun and Irena!! I think I will try using it as it doesn't zap. I'm glad you like the look of it! I added orange peel powder to the bottom part and the line is actually cocoa powder!
I used filtered water from my refrigerator filter, I have done so before without any problems but seems something wasn't right this time. When I remember to I buy distilled water but so often I don't have it or I use half goats milk and half filtered water. Its also good to know the 30% Crisco might not have been the problem although since we are unsure what else is in there percentage-wise I think I'll go back to using Palm oil!

Well, it seems the soap is fine! I just rinsed it a while to get the oil off the outside of it and it is a nice hard bar of soap! It doesn't lather with as nice bubbles as I like but is more creamy, I guess. I don't think I'll use that recipe again, though. I think the oil seeping must have just happened at the beginning as it was gelling or early in the curing.
