Hi All,

I bought a wonderful book, The Everything Soapmaking Book. It is answering soo many questions for me, I love it!! I am stumped about one thing. Every recipe in the book is in weight ounces. The only way I can think of to put these in soapcalc is to first convert everything to grams. I have no idea how to change the recipes to percents. I know soapcalc will do that for me. I was just curious if there was a way to enter ounces into soapcalc??

I have Googled and searched myself silly trying to figure this out. :?

Hi Dabbler,

You can enter ounces in SoapCalc. Under section 2, select ounces, then enter the desired total ounces of your oils/butters. Under section 6 you have the option of selecting % or oz (ounces). Select oz, then you can enter the desired ounces for each oil/butter in your recipe. The directions section on the SoapCalc site goes into further detail. It's a wonderful lye calculator and was my fave before I began using the Soapmaker software.

Happy Soaping! :)

If you use The Sage Lye Calculator, you can input your recipe there in ounces. Once you hit calculate, at the bottom, there is a recipe resizer. Always go by weight. This calculator will also show you each ingredient that you put in in %.

DUH!!! I wasn't changing it to ounces in section 2. Thank you! I'm going to make a few of the 1 pound batches. I have a silicone mold with 12 openings. Would this be good to use for this size batches? Or should I use something else?

You're welcome. That mold should be ok, just keep in mind that your batch may not get warm enough to complete gel phase that way. But gelling is optional. Some soapers don't gel. I gel all my batches except the ones with milk or honey added b/c they're more likely to overheat.

Thank you again. I will be putting in something else. I agree about gelling. Someday, after I have a few batches under my apron, I want to try honey!

If you are making just a 1 lb. batch, it is better to convert the ounces into grams for better accuracy. You can round up on your oils and round down on your lye if the numbers to the right of the decimal point are two or more.

Yes, grams are my friend. I knew soapcalc would give me the different weights, once I figured out how to input my ounces. I think I will always use grams for soap. I really don't want to take any chances with lye. When a recipe calls for a Tb of castor oil at the end, can I just use a Tb or should I weigh that too? It's after the oils and lye are combined.

I weigh everything. I add all my oils and butters right up front. If you add castor oil after the cook, there is less of a chance that the castor will saponify. You want the castor to saponify as it helps with bubbles.

There is another site for these calculations you might want to try: soalcalc.net

Brambleberrys is great, so just a thought.
