Teach Soap

I have been using only highest quality palm oil till now and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on using Crisco as a substitute when you run out of palm oil and can't get any in a bind?
I read on a few sites that people's soaps came out fine.
One of the main ingredients is indeed palm oil but there are a few other things in there as well.
Do you guys have any experience with this?
(I know there are palm free recipes and I have made those very successfully as well, and I also know I can substitute other butters for palm - my question here is specifically re using Crisco...)

You can use Crisco. Just recalculate your recipe through a lye Calc. I'm not sure if Brambleberry's soap calc has Crisco. If not, you can use this one.

Thanks Irena! I was indeed using Brambleberry's.

Why would someone use Crisco instead of lard, which, btw, IS included on the BB lye calc- I suspect Anne has a good reason for setting it up that way. Which do you think makes better soap, SB? What are the qualities of Crisco in soap, pls, as Ive never done it before? Usually i use lard instead of palm bc i cant use up a bucket of palm before it goes bad...

Hmmm. Ok. Could you pls expound a little about which oils are more appropriate for lard and which for Crisco, and the differing properties between the two (lard and Crisco)?

Cool website. Thnx. So basically use Crisco instead of lard whenever the goal is not to harden up the soap. So does that mean i can use Crisco for making liquid soap? Altho i cant imagine ever switching to soybean oil shortening, whatever that is, rather than preferring some nice coconut on my skin.
I still cannot think of a situation when i might want to use Crisco. Can you pls give me an example?

Slightly off topic will any lard work? We get bags of the stuff in the local stores but I have no idea it's origin.

I'll have to ask if it has been rendered because I am not a huge fan of lard in my cooking but my guess is that is has been. Thanks for the reply
