Teach Soap

Wondering if someone could help me with this.

I have successfully made salt bars, however my last two batches are acting strange

Recipe: 85% Coconut Oil 76 degrees, 10% Castor Oil, 5% Shea Butter, Superfat 20%, full liquid, lye as per SoapCal
I put the soap in the oven at 170 degrees for 1-2 hours

In my 1st batch liquid was water, I used Essential Oils of Orange, Peppermint, herbs peppermint leaves and Orange peel powder added at light trace and Sea Salt at 75% of oils. (this is the 3rd time I have used this recipe, but the 1st time I have experience oiliness when I touch the bars of soap)

2nd batch no EO's Sea Salt at 80% of oils and liquid was coconut milk (this was frozen and lye was slowly stirred in, no burn)

Both batches feel oily to the touch. I did a ph. test and ph. is neutral, smell is wonderful, lather is great.

Trying to understand why these batches feel oily and previous batches came out of the oven some what dry.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Salt bars are normally made with 100% coconut oil with a 20% superfat. Yours sounds more like a regular recipe with a high superfat.

Thanks for getting back to me. I retested the recipe this time using no heat. I will remove from the molds this evening to if I obtain different results.

I never use dead sea salt in my salt bars.

This was definitely an issue of over heating. At close examination the bars have a boat load of bubbles on the outer surface, major sign of overheating. Since this did not happen before I think I need to get my oven checked, it is old and the temperature gage probably needs to be adjusted.

Just as an aside: you can use DSS, just not as 100% of the salt.

I never CPOP my salt bars. They are rock hard within 20-30 minutes without it. When I do CPOP a batch of soap it only takes 15-30 minutes in the oven! I set it to 270*F, and once it is heated I turn the oven off and put the soap in. Gels perfectly with practically no chance of overheating
