So, I've been seeing some talk (or type, rather) about unsaponifiable oils? What exactly are these? And what about refined vs. unrefined oils? What are these? Apparently, they have different numbers of "unsaponifiables"? Could someone explain this whole concept to me...?

Thanks all.

Unsaponifiables are the fatty acids that do no interact with lye. Unrefined shea butter and unrefined avocado oil are good examples. They help contribute to the superfat, but you won't know exactly by how much. The amount of unsaponifiables in each ingredient varies from batch to batch and season to season. It is best to always superfat whether you use an unrefined butter or oil, so the soap is mild and gentle.
