I read somewhere that CP soaps have only a few months shelf life?
I was under the impression that the older the soaps, the harder the soaps, the better?

I don't believe they do. But.. if you've used an oil that is close to it's shelf life. they may show up in handcrafted products. I have a soap that I've made since I first started. Not on purpose but it's here and I it's still good. How do I know? it looks fine. Just mellowing out with age.

I believe also they do get better the longer they aren't used. Like Olive oils soaps come to prime in 6 months. If we aged our soap it would just be even more fab. but.. again.. I use my soap up so I can't say for 100% sure it's better then it would have been 10 years ago.

Not true. CP soap can have a very long shelf life if it's stored properly (away from heat, light, humidity). However, if you used high amounts of oils with a short shelf life (like grapeseed) then your soap may be more prone to DOS. Otherwise, it should last a long time. 8)

what are you saying. Sound like what I said,it depends on the shelf life of the oil used. So what's not true?

I said it depends on the oils possibly Irene. I have soap 10 years old also. So. it I t had been made with an oil that is at the end of it's shelf life it also would not have lasted.

I am just now getting to the end of my big soap making frenzy of 2012-2013. Making soap just as a hobby, not a business. So after my house was full of soap, I stopped for a year while I used the bars up.

One example: Just yesterday, I sent a bar to a friend I made in Sept 2012 (over 1.5 years old). Scented with Nature's Garden Almond....its as good as it was when it was ready at 5 weeks. That's the oldest bar I had. Still going strong and great scent.

The next oldest I have in the house was made in October 2012 - again, scent going strong (NG Cherry - which nearly knocks you over OOB).

FWIW - it depends more on the fragrance oil and whether that held up. Your mileage may vary...for me its all about the scent. Unscented soap is NO FUN! I have a few like that....soap is fine (over 1 year old) just not much scent left.
