As a few of you know, I've just returned to soap making after a hiatus of many years. Well, I'm thrilled with all the new techniques I'm picking up on blogs and forums, etc.
I decided to try my hand with CPOP, and thank goodness that's where I started.
I have custody of my niece, she's now 25 years old, severely autistic and mentally retarded. Well, recently she's developed a really sneaky streak regarding food. She's one of these people with no turn-off on her appetite and in the past it wasn't so bad because she was obsessive, only ate certain foods, but we had to watch the quantity. Now she's over that and will eat anything. On Saturday, she discovered that we hid her gummy vitamins on top of the fridge and before I caught her, she'd gotten the child-proof cap off and eaten half the bottle. On Sunday it was a box of crackers she found up there. We cleared the food off and I put my freshly made soap up there. It was a couple days old and still very soft.
Well, with the lovely color and fragrance, it looks good enough to eat. So...she ate it.
Just a bite, but a BIG bite. And though it must have tasted nasty, she swallowed it down. No ill effects, though she got a little green around the gills. Anyhow, we'd have had a trip to the ER if it had been normal cold processed soap. I'd already been using a thin slice to sample the lather and fragrance and it was fine in the PH test, so it wasn't a major medical scare like the vitamins.
OMG. How scary that was. Now I need to clear a cupboard and put a lock on it, I guess. And I'll keep using heat instead of normal curing. I'm so grateful for everyone who did tutorials on CPOP...saved her a lot of misery.
