Do you have to use a specific wood, or will any do?

What size is your wooden mold?

Did/can you varnish it to seal the wood?

Do you use a liner (like wax paper or parchment paper)?

Anything else you would like to add??

My first wood mold, was make out of left over Brazilian Walnut. It is very heavy and has a natural dark finish and it oily on its own. We did not do anything to it. It gets lined with freezer paper. I have a new pine mold, that has no finish on it. I do CPOP and do not want that finish to come off on the soap. I am going to experment with different way to line the mold. I have Mylar and foam sheeting from Walmart. I will cut to fit then tape them on the outside of the liner. No tape against the soap. I am hoping that this will work instead of freezer. They way they can be reused instead of trashed. We will see. I will do a laundry lard batch to test. Do not want to waste good soaping oils on a liner that will not work.

My smallest wood mold hold 4 lbs. of raw soap. It is not stained, as I use it sometimes in the oven and I don't want any fumes.

I use a trash bag as a liner. I hate lining.

My hubby made my mold for me based on rough specifications I gave him. It's 9" by 13" by 3" and holds 4-5 lbs. He made it out of clear pine. I line it with wax paper. I, too, hate lining. I can never seem to get all of the creases out. I love it!! Here are some pics:

I like those closing clasps on the sides. I have hooks and eyes and they don't seem to work as well. They are too loose.
