Teach Soap

Hi all,

I found a new soap recipe that I really want to try, but the lye measurement (in grams) are in the thousandths (lye=125.632). My Taylor kitchen scale doesn't measure in the thousandths Do any of you recommend a better suited scale for soapmaking?

You would need an inhuman amount of skill to be able to pour lye at that accuracy. I would round that to 125.

Round down for your lye and round up for your oils. If you post the recipe here, we can help you with it. You do not need a scale with that much accuracy. Most of us don't.

Thank you. I was wondering why I hadn't heard of more people having trouble with that degree of measuring, but I know how important accuracy is so I was confused lol. Here's the recipe. It's a nice basic recipe that I can add different scents, clays, etc. to. I am using the gram measurements:

Base Ingredients Grams Ounces Percentage
Coconut Oil 270 gr. 9.524 oz. 30%
Olive Oil 360 gr. 12.699 oz. 40%
Palm Oil 270 gr. 9.524 oz. 30%
Distilled Water 326.07 gr. 11.502 oz.
Lye 125.632 gr. 4.432 oz.

Water as % of Oils = 36.23
Super Fat/Discount = 8%

I would recalculate the recipe so it looks like this in ounces. If you are only using grams, then you can leave it as is with distilled water at 326 gr and lye at 125 gr.

Coconut Oil 9.5 oz
Olive Oil 12.7 oz
Palm Oil 9.5 oz
