You cannot interchange them because they do not have the same saponification numbers. They have a few similar properties, but also some very different ones. PKO is highly cleansing, where palm oil is not. PKO is not very conditioning, where palm oil is. PKO is not exactly like coconut either, but has some similar properties. To see for yourself, visit soapcalc.net and click on one oil in the oil list, then look at the individual number list on the left hand side of the screen. Also, the acids present in each oil are listed at the bottom of the properties list. Each of these acids drives the properties present in the oils, a higher % will offer you a larger amount of a characteristics. By comparing the top properties to the high % of the acids on the bottom, you will begin to see the correlation, and will learn which acids create which properties. Warning though, this calculator can be highly addicting! Lol I have soaped for years and still spent hours here when I first found it. In fact, I still do occasionally! I run all my recipes through it and I have fun adjusting and playing with numbers to see what differences they make. Sometimes you move 1% and create a whole different soap, other times you can move it 10% and change nothing.
Enjoy the journey~
