Out of curiosity and thought it may also help for other people who are doing their research and considering delving into cold process soap making.

Why is it you can't actually use tap water? A lot of people have said distilled water only (i.e. bottled water)

Would it be ok to boil tap water in the kettle, let it cool, then use it?

(they say never to give new born babies distilled water i.e. bottled water due to the salt content!! i'm not sure as i don't have any kids but cool boiled water is safe)

Any advice?

thanks in advance for help :)

I use tap water when making my soap. Since we have a fairly new well, we do have our water tested regularly though.

I have hard water with lots of dissolved minerals (and possibly metals). I find that type of water will make the soap more prone to DOS. I use either filtered or distilled water.

Our city water is pretty good. I run it through a filter before I use it. I switched from distilled when I went to three different stores and couldn't find distilled--two drug stores and a Target. I know I could go to the big grocery store across town, but it seemed ridiculous to me to drive that far. So... I put a filter on my faucet, and experimented. No problems. After all, much of the time I'm using goat milk or beer or coffee as my base liquid, and all of those have minerals and other stuff in them. So while distilled is best if you're unsure of your water quality (heavy metals, for instance), I think filtered is fine.

I used tap water at first, but then switched to filtered water from the fridge. I really don't see any differences in my soap.

I'm glad I found this topic - I was all set to start a nice Soaping Saturday, and then I realized that my hubby drank all of the bottled distilled water :S It's negative degrees here with the windchill, and I was NOT looking forward to a trip to the store... Filtered water it is for today!

Bottled water doesn't mean it's distilled water. Most of the time bottled drinking water is not distilled, it's either filtered water, or spring water. To my knowledge distilled water is not for drinking.

That is what I mean, distill water is not for drinking because it doesn't taste good, don't mean it harms our body or anything :D

I use distilled water for lotions and for my coffee maker.
