Teach Soap

Hi everyone,

Not posted here in ages!!

I've been away practising with a soap formula for regular bars of soap, and whilst I think the recipe is pretty good, a lot of my bars tend to go a little bit mushy after you use them. I've got a soap dish that drains and everything, and I always wait 4-6 weeks before using any of the soap so it's cured properly. Is there any additives I could put in to make my formula harder? No one likes to see a mangy bar of soap on their sink! What do you use to achieve a hard bar?

Long cure and the oils. What oil percentages are you using.

Adding sodium lactate or plain old salt to your lye water can help with hardness. Bramble Berry sells sodium lactate for $4 a pound, and recommends using at 1 teaspoon per pound of oils.

I would reformulate your recipe and add some butters or harder oils.

I use 5% cocoa butter in my bars, as well as adding 1-3% sodium lactate. Nice and hard, and they last for ages in the shower! Well over a month.
