I managed to get the supplier to agree that we can buy 20L drums of palm oil. (Originally the minimum order was 100 x 20L drums :o )
Good price too - roughly $2.15 per litre :)

Good for you! I don't use palm oil.

Hopefully it's a from a sustainable source and not killing Orangutans.

Yes, where all obviously or known palm ingredients are listed, I avoid. I also have 'adopted' twin orangutan's as part of the Batu Mbelin Rescue Center in Northern Sumatra. It's a monthly monetary donation to help rehabilitate injured, homeless or orphaned orangutan's due to the damage the overuse of palm does to their environment.

I think it's great there are sustainable sources of palm out there and that's a start, but I chose not to use palm at all in any of my products until that is the only source of palm.

RSPO - Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil :)

I'm a huge animal lover in general, but my heart breaks when species suffer due to the hands of man. Animal's can't speak their plight or voice their pain so anything I can do, I will. One day, when my kids are grown, I would love to be able to go over and help in a rescue centre. My mum went to Africa a few years ago now and worked in a wild life center over there with cheetah's that were orphaned due to poachers and hunters.

Palm oil was one of the first things I educated myself on when working out my CP recipe. Like nearly everyone, I jumped in with your basic Olive, Palm, Coconut and Castor recipe so that I could start from the beginning to understand what I was doing. Once I felt familiar with the procedure, my first goal was to substitute palm oil and become 100% palm free. I'm pretty sure I even posted about here, although that would be over a year ago now...

I only have one kilo of palm kernal oil here which is from my very first soap ingredient order and I've never used it.

I started out using Palm Oil and then went to Palm Kernel Oil Flakes. I have since started soaping palm free. Since we eat mostly non-processed foods, my palm consumption is probably less than most people. Since it is questionable whether Roundtable is effective (but at least it is a start), I figure why add to the misery if I can avoid it. I may not be an animal lover or advocate, but I cannot feed the greed of the Cartel responsible for these issues. Once all my soaps that do have palm in them are sold, my house will be palm free (other than the plant in the pot on the table).

I do advocate strongly for children, however. We all have our passions, which is how we survive. Somebody fills in where there is a lack, so if my not soaping with palm helps fill that lack -- so much the better

What do you use instead of palm? Tallow? or do you use other vegetable oils that would help make your bar hard?

Lovin' Soap Blog has some good posts on this subject; one in particular features 6 palm free recipes that Amanda had blog readers test out. That post has some comments from readers that have tried them.

For the palm free people ~ Do you use stearic acid? If so, can I ask where you get it?
Also, do you use vegetable glycerin for mixing colors, etc? I know Mountain Rose Herbs has a palm free vegetable glycerin, but I'm wondering if there are other suppliers out there?

No stearic. Nothing other than normal oils, I just reformulated my recipe.
