Teach Soap

Has anyone tried mixing their colours...oxides in my case, into the oils before adding the lye? I have had a few batches that seemed a little less mixed than others(leaving a slight design in the bars that I wasn't going for) after whisking the crap out of the batter to make sure the colours are well mixed.

I make my colours with oxides and glycerine and then put it in after the soap is traced and scented!

I mix my oxides with oil and use a mini mixer to make sure it's all mixed well and there's no clumps. A mini mixer like a frother. It seems to do the job nicely.

But do you mix them into your melted oils before adding your lye?

I've done it with micas and the Bramble Berry neons before when working with florals, but I've never tried it with oxides.

I have mixed oxides into my oils before the lye but don't usually anymore. It is harder for me to judge the final color plus it colors the whole batch. It's also seems to work a bit better to use an oil to blend my oxide into rather than glycerin and give it a chance to sit before using. (Mix it up again though!) It seems to help rehydrate the powder whether it's oxide or neons. You can always take a bit of oil from your oil blend to make your color slurry. Sometimes it's just easier to use glycerin if you're using say oxides and ultramarines.
