Teach Soap

I have always used glass pyrex measure bowls for making my soap, however after reading some of the conversations about the glass breaking or splintering into my batter I thought I better switch ASAP to plastic.

Anyway, I am looking at these

but am a little concerned about toxins in the plastic getting into my soap batter. They don't specify BPA free, and are made from long lasting polypropylene...again, is this safe?

I have always used a double broiler to melt my oils so my other somewhat stupid question is...does everyone else micro melt their oils? Is this faster but less accurate in temp? I normally soap by 'hand feel on the bowls' and don't really use a thermometer...bad likely I know but so far its worked really well(I only used a therm when I was first learning)

I micro melt my oils...but I use a glass bowl for that and transfer the melted oils into a stainless steel pot. Many people use the cheap plastic buckets found in the paint section of Home Depot, Lowes, etc....

I don't know where you live, but Smart & Final stores carry heavy duty, little see through buckets that are easy to use with small soap batches. Anne-Marie used one in one of her soap videos.

Soapbuddy, I am in Ontario. Looking for one similar to the ones I see Ann Marie using...with a pour spout on it! It will be strange melting in the micro but if thats what I have to do with plastic then so be it:)

I usually make my soaps in a stainless steel pot (I actually just bought 2 more 8qt pots from Walmart for $7 each) but, if I need a pouring spout I use a plastic pitcher. You know like you'd make kool-aid or something in. I got mine from the dollor store and I use it all the time to mix my lye solution and it's held up great. But you could get a larger and more heavy duty Rubbermaid one at Walmart. Just a thought.

You could alway melt your oils on the stove and then transfer to the plastic pitcher to mix with the lye.

Oh and I never microwave my oils, but I also don't have a microwave so... lol

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Lowe's or Home Dept have small plastic buckets and Smart & Final has clear, thick containers like the kind that Anne-Marie uses.
