I'm throwing in my 3 cents:

Salt Soap from Magic Hands is amazing. It's like taking a standing bubble bath with tons of salty goodness. I was expecting this bar to be super scrubby, but it honestly felt like normal soap in terms of texture. Great bubbles and I just love the scent. Keeps taking me back to Santa Barbara beaches. Woohoo, Magic Hands!

I also want to add that the bubbles really do remind me of sea foam. Not the ugly brown kind of course. But beautiful white bubbly foam clusters.

Thanks for the kind words, cubbles! I'm glad it got there safely, and I'm very happy that you liked it. :D

This idea was so intriguing, that yesterday I whipped up a batch of salt soap. I used CPOP method and cut the bars 4 hours later. It looks and smells great, but now I'm wondering how long it needs to cure, before I can try it. I showed people at work, and now they want the soap as soon as I'll let them have it. I did use castor and grapeseed oils as well as 70% coconut oil, if that makes a difference in cure time.

I would wait a week, since it's CPOP.

Thank you so much, Soapbuddy. I'll put it to the test in a week. I'm really curious. :)

Aggghhh! I made some salt soap the other day and I guess I waited too long because it broke into unattractive chunks as I tried to cut it. The last salt bars I made I cut really early and they were still gell-y inside. However even though they were gell-y, they were still rather crumbly. Stayed together in a bar but definitely had bits that fell off as I moved them around. I used 80% coconut and 20% other liquid oils. Are your salt bars crumbly like mine??? They are my hubby's favorite even though they aren't pretty. I do so want them to be pretty though...I can't give chunks away as gifts!

I gel mine in the oven and cut while the log is still hot, but after it's firm to the touch. It takes a little practice to get the timing right.

Some soapers use individual molds, so they don't have to be so precise.

You know, 1/2 mine got a big crack in them, and I think it was because I was trying to push "not straight down" and the pressure was too much. Also, waiting about 15 minutes too long probably didn't help. :P The other 1/2 look great, and now hubby has a canister of salt-bar crumbles to use after working in the garage :D

Did another one today, and my recipe with 75% salt PPO was *awesome* to cut at 3 hours post-mix.

I'm so happy. Nevermind that I had to quick-change and find another suitable "salt bar" scent when I accidently poured the Ocean Rain in the wrong pot!

(Cool Water to the rescue!)

This question is for Magic Hands. . .

I am new to soaping but totally intrigued with the salt bar soap. Two questions.

CPOP: How long do I leave in the oven at 150 degrees approximately?
CPOP: Since I am new to this, I only have cheap plastic microwave molds from the 99 cent store. Can I use one of those rubbery (silicone) brownie pans you find around for the oven portion?

I just woke up 2 hours early today to wrestle with a few molds this am (cold process but totally and utterly stuck to the plastic molds) so I am very, very gun shy!

Thanks,

Lisa

for salt bars, I follow a slightly different schedule - one hour with the oven on, one hour with the oven off, and 30 minutes out of the oven, and they're ready to cut. however, that will change depending on the batch size. really, you want to cut them right as they're coming out of gel. and yes, the silicone pan should be okay.

honestly, you'd probably be better off trying a regular soap first, just to get the feel, before you try the salt bars. they're fun, but they're a little trickier than the regular soap. :)

magic_hands, I just re-read through this post and saw that you said you use equal amounts of salt to oil and am I understanding that you use 100% Coconut Oil? Nothing else?

I just tested the salt bars I made that were only 50% salt and 55% Coconut Oil. They were nice but not too dramatically different than soap itself. Reminded me of the comment Soapbuddy made about how maybe the salt is just for label appeal. I mean I could tell there was salt in it, but it just didn't have the same wow factor as yours. I was thinking about trying 80% salt with 70% Coconut Oil (since I've read that most people do something along those lines). But I'll wait to hear from you first.
