Can I just say that my basic recipe I have been using for over a year is 0% superfat and I have had no problems with it - it is NOT drying or lye heavy and I use it on my face even! I can even lather up my face and open my eyes without it stinging (depending only on the type of fragrance oil used)
When I went to soapcalc just now and put in the same recipe with 5% superfat the recipe did not change other than the lye amount dropped by 8 grams (in ounces its less than .3oz).
I test all my soaps on myself and never have a lye heavy soap - I really think all this scary - "You will burn your skin off if you dont superfat" is a bit much for a new soapmaker and really not the correct information. Even Soap Queen says "Using the exact amount of lye you need to make the exact amount of soap with nothing left over (no extra oils) is called a 0% superfat or a 0% lye discount."

Each oil and butter has a SAP range. That range varies slightly from how it was grown, how it was harvested and how it was processed. So you might have a batch with 0% superfat that's fine and the next batch will come out lye heavy. Since not everyone's skin is the same, I always, always superfat. I make a lot of soap and I am not willing to take a chance with making soap at 0% superfat and have someone sue me because the soap stripped their skin or worse. I have been making soap for almost 40 years now and I know what lye heavy soap can do.

The only time I do a 0% superfat soap is when I make it for my laundry and just grating that up makes my hands feel dried out. I can't imagine using unfatted soap on my body...I'd sooner use the grocery store brands again!

I don't want to sound like a complete b!$3*h and i am very greatful for all the helpful info you have all posted on here about
superfatting soap, etc...

But my original intention for this post was being surprised at finding out the mango butter from my supplier stated that is was non saponifiable.
To further on from the original intentions of this post and not going off subject.. does anyone know any other stuff that is unsaponifiable?

As you all know i am a new soap maker, and with all your knowledge and experieces, i think it would be good to further educate othe new soapers on ingredients that are non saponifiable (i.e. won't turn into soap via lye reaction)

Also to differ away from the superfatting of my soaps. It didn't work and i have obviously F'd it all up.

On the bright side i will remember to ALWAYS superfat.

Unrefined butters always have more usaponifiables, but there is no easy way to know what the % is. I wouldn't worry about it. Calculate all your oils and butters right up front, use a soap calculator, superfat at least 5% and you should be fine.
