Take your time, make sure that your scale is accurate, use grams if you are making a small batch, use safety gear and respect the lye. Just as long as you follow safety precautions, you will be fine. :)

Thank you, Soapbuddy.

I'm still reading and watching.

I just came across this article while looking for a soaping class in my area:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/ ... -make-soap

This is wrong information. Isn't it?

What a horrid article! "Soap making is a hazardous business. Frederika Whitehead braves a beginners' course and tries to avoid being burned, blinded or killed." Geez...it sounds like they are trying to scare the daylights out of the class members!

Much of the information is correct, but it's not presented very well, at least not in the article. You can do no-heat (room-temp) soaping - I do it most of the time and like the method. Vinegar is not good to use on lye splatters - you should rinse with lots of cool water.

I am looking for a class west of Denver in CO.

I just found this class, the information listed scares me a little.

I thought the first rule of working with lye (maybe the second)

DO NOT pour water on lye.

This is what is written for the class.

Measure out hard or solid oil and butters and place in soap pot

Add water to lye, stir and when the lye is dissolved pour over hard oils in soap pot

What am I missing?

Does anyone here know of a cold process soap making class in the Denver area?

Water is never poured on the lye. The lye is sprinkled into the water. Right?

I think I better STOP reading & wait for my kit from BB.

I just read this from another class.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS
Soap contains lye. With that comes a caution: lye will burn your skin and blind you if it splashes in your eyes. Vinegar is an antidote, but it cannot undo the damage of spilled lye.

I guess, all those books I read about using vinegar on lye spills were incorrect, but it I rarely have anything other than a slight itch from lye on my skin, and when I have used the vinegar, had no adverse reactions....sorry if my information was incorrect

Unless you are reading here, I would stop.

Hi Soapbuddy,

Think of snow falling on the lake. That way you'll remember.

This is a great way to remember! Thank you.

I have found a class at the Botanical Gardens in Denver. I'm going to take my BB kit with me!

I can't wait!

Hello ladies.

My son was asking me a question. He is always the scientific person around. And he wants to know "why don't we use Litmus Paper to test Lye? "

After tasting the soap a time of two... I would not mind trying it
