What are your suggestions for "insulating lightly"? A large (beach) towel?
The quilt I'm currently using is an old, polyester (heavy and itchy!) quilt from a few generations back. I guess I've gone overboard on the insulation!
Do you think less heat will help with the spots also, or mainly just the crackled/mottled design?

Well, it's worth a try! I've got enough palm left for one more batch of my regular recipe. Will apply the "lighter insulation" hints and see what happens!
Would the temp I actually soap at make a difference? I'm usually between 100 and 120 F when combining lye water and oils.

It's possible that it's stearic streaks. Are you at the end of your palm oil supply or did you soap cooler than usual?

You didn't use TD but you did use a colorant ....I think the colorant is just not mixed enough threwout the batch and the white specks and crackling are just the color of what your entire batch would have been having added no color at all, IMO.
