Coolah, your percentages in your first post add up to 110%

+1 on all of the warnings about glass containers.

If you can't find castor easily, no big deal. You can make a lovely soap that is 60% OO, 20% PO, and 20% CO.

Relax, use goggles and gloves, and enjoy!

I mix my lye & gm in a plastic jug while submerged in an ice bath and it works just fine...no need to buy a stainless pitcher i wouldn't think...

When I first started I had watched all the soap queen videos and in all of those, A-M uses pyrex...so i bought all kinds of pyrex pitchers, bowls. I, of course, learned about the shattering possibility right after I bought them. Oh well...now I have lots of new stuff for the kitchen!! :)

Yay, and good luck!!! My first five batches I did had no color or fragrance. I just wanted to get the process down. I also recommend the soap queen videos. They really made me feel more comfortable.

As for mixing lye, I also use a plastic container I got at the Dollar Store here. Works great. Just a tip, (which you'll read everywhere) make sure when you mix you do it in a well ventilated area. I actually mix mine outside now because the first time I mixed my lye water, I was a couple feet away doing something else and started coughing. Trust me, you do not want to breath that stuff in, very bad for you. I've learned my lesson and always mix outside now.

And I agree with Coolah, the easier the recipe, the better. The first recipe I did was 75% olive oil, 20% coconut oil, and 5% avocado oil. One of my more popular soaps, too. As you read more and learn more, it becomes easier.

I was explaining this process to my husband last night and he asked how I learned so much. I told him I read a lot. On here (even if I'm not commenting), blogs, and books. So much to learn, not enough time :-)

And am I the only one who has a hubby who is supportive of this? He thinks it's so cool. But then again, he likes a hobby so that when he goes racing cars (his hobby) it leaves me with something to do other than sulk and complain about him not being there

Ok, good. Yes, he LOVES that I make a little extra money on the side. Well, technically, I'm still in the red when it comes to the Biz side, but it's getting better. Hoping to pay back the investment....eventually :-)

goddessbec - good luck on your soaping journey!
You may find castor oil in the pharmacy section of your store near the laxatives. I use it at 5% - it gives nice bubbles.

Coolah - Soapinatrix???? Really?

I did it! I made my first batch!! Oh wow, why didnt I do this earlier?? How much fun was it!!! And the possibilities of what you can do.....

I have more questions though off course.

I had a problem with getting my oils cool enough, and mean while my lye was cooling down while my oils were staying about 130-140. What happens if they are not the right temp?

Also, as this was my first time and i had never seen trace before IRL, what i *think* was trace happened very quickley, is this right? It went to a smooth thin custard consistancy. Also, at what stage do i know i have mixed it enough and its ok to mould?

If i were to add fragrance to a batch do i add that at trace? AND when i measure the fragrance at whatever % it is, is that of the total oils i have used? (What i mean is, if i use oils that amount to 300grams is this the figure i use to work out the % of fragrance to add. Hope that makes sense)

And i just checked it before i came to work, no gelling, but its hard to touch (couldnt resist) is gelling good or bad? Or does it all just depend on what ingredients you use?

Ok sorry for all that, im just so curious now that i have actually MADE something. Not likeing the whole waiting game though, i wanna use it now!!!!
