Yay, and good luck!!! My first five batches I did had no color or fragrance. I just wanted to get the process down. I also recommend the soap queen videos. They really made me feel more comfortable.
As for mixing lye, I also use a plastic container I got at the Dollar Store here. Works great. Just a tip, (which you'll read everywhere) make sure when you mix you do it in a well ventilated area. I actually mix mine outside now because the first time I mixed my lye water, I was a couple feet away doing something else and started coughing. Trust me, you do not want to breath that stuff in, very bad for you. I've learned my lesson and always mix outside now.
And I agree with Coolah, the easier the recipe, the better. The first recipe I did was 75% olive oil, 20% coconut oil, and 5% avocado oil. One of my more popular soaps, too. As you read more and learn more, it becomes easier.
I was explaining this process to my husband last night and he asked how I learned so much. I told him I read a lot. On here (even if I'm not commenting), blogs, and books. So much to learn, not enough time

And am I the only one who has a hubby who is supportive of this? He thinks it's so cool. But then again, he likes a hobby so that when he goes racing cars (his hobby) it leaves me with something to do other than sulk and complain about him not being there
