A local, biggish soap maker not only makes claims like anti fungal and bug repellent and helps with psoriasis and so on. And she doesn't put weights on her boxes. Makes me crazy because she's in a lot of local stores, and while her soaps are nice, they're no better than what I'm making. In fact, they're a little drying to me. Harumph.

Yesterday, I had someone ask if my soap is made with oils.

I know that people don't understand how soap is made and it took me a minute to get my jaw off the floor to figure out if she was really asking that question. I get that a lot of commercials soaps are made oil-free and are recommended for people with sensitive skin but I really had to hold my tongue from saying "And all those oil free soaps, yeah, it's pretty much synthetic and detergent."

I know another soaper who does only goats milk (as in, she has a herd of goats and milks them daily) and it is one of the most gentle soaps I've ever used.

Couple of days ago someone said to me, "Are your soaps organic?"
Well, the oils might be, but I hardly think the NaOH is! Or the FO's for that matter!
I said, "We use vegetable oils" and that seemed to satisfy her.

? are people gullible? Well they are also desperate! We all look for an easy cure or fix, and washing with a soap to prevent cancer would be a very easy one.

I remember the claim we discussed here once on a bar of soap the claimed "Cures stupid". I am sure it was all in jest, but then you would never know what the consumer might expect.

Best claim is; It will get you clean.

As for this lady, I think that someone should take her aside or contact her and let her know she is setting herself up for a law suite and is giving the wrong impression to the general public about all handmade soap makers. Ask her if she has had her soaps tested to be able to prove that they do what she says they do? Ask her if she carries insurance?
