Snow is pure if you don't account for the particles which adhere to it on the way through the lower atmosphere. It is actually pretty dirty! Smog, exhaust, carbon emissions, "acid" precipitation factors, etc.. In environmental chemistry we actually analysed freshly fallen snow (collected in a sterile container) I was pretty disgusted when I saw the compounds we isolated I let my dog drink out of the toilet, but I don't like her eating snow, if that gives you an idea of what we found!

Wow! So if I collect it in a rural setting would there be less of those things? I will run it thru a coffee filter if I did not collect it on the day it snows, now maybe I should do this all of the time. Or like semeager said, just get a brita filter.

Possibly there would be less, but it would depend on where the air cell you are near travels, it could bring "bad" air from cities or other air cells. The PUR filters are pretty good, they remove a lot of impurities. I prefer these to Brita filters as they have more layers of filtering material after their activated carbon layer. This means less carbon precipitate would make it through. The only places to get near pure precipitation would be the middle of the larger oceans, and the poles at certain times of the year.

I think I'll just stick with regular filtered or distilled water.
