Wow...I never knew that about Palm Oil!! Learn something new every day

Just wanted to jump in and say thank you for this thread! I have just bought my first bucket of Palm Oil and didn't know any of this (none of the books I have read tell you to melt it all ) so now I will hunt out some smaller containers and do as suggested!

I'm really grateful to Anne-Marie for mentioning it (it was in a video, but I don't remember which one). I would have never known otherwise. And I've read several books on soap making. You'd think someone else would mention it!

I've never see that box before. It says vegetable shortening. Is there any other ingredient list?

Copha, a registered trademark of Peerless, is a form of vegetable fat shortening made from hydrogenated coconut oil. It is 100% fat, at least 98% of which is saturated. It also contains soybean lecithin. It is popular in Australia where it is used in many foods for children, such as rocky road, or chocolate crackles, which are made from Rice Bubbles, copha and cocoa powder.

Copha is produced only in Australia, but there are many suppliers of hydrogenated coconut fat in various forms worldwide. It is a necessary ingredient in traditional Australian sweets such as chocolate crackles and white Christmas, and a "chocolate coating" on baked goods that amounts to a rather waxy form of compound chocolate. A dramatic decline in the price of chocolate over the decades is likely to be a significant contribution to the declining popularity of Copha-based confectionery.

Interesting! Our vegetable shortening is usually made from soybean and/or cottonseed oil, and sometimes with palm oil. Some people call vegetable shortening lard, but true lard is made out of rendered pig fat.

Pig Fat Hey Mr, you look dirty, go rub yourself down with this pig fat soap I'm wondering if the lard is the stuff my grandma used to get in the white plastic tub - that would be used to deep fry yeah? Might have to look into that, I would have thought lard would leave a greasy feeling...
