So I tried doing a two layer soap with indigo and woad powder. I mixed the indigo in with the water ahead of the lye, and had trouble getting it to mix. It turned out I had a little bit of oil on my spatula that I was mixing with and it kept clumping on that instead of mixing in the water. Adding the lye didn't help either. So I put even more indigo into the oils, but no dice either. I had more luck with the woad powder. I added it to the lye water mixture and used a fresh new spatula with no sign of anything on it. The woad powder mixed in beautifully, and turned a greenish color in the water. I was expecting that because of the high pH. In the soap, I got a beautiful aqua color, that has since faded a bit. I was only making 500g for each of the layers, so measuring the tiny amounts of coloring was a challenge. This is going to take a while to master. I love challenges.

It does take some trials, doesn't it? I add my indigo to about a cup of soap after it is mixed, but nit yet traced, then add it back into the batch. While I had intended to try it the way you said, I haven't had trouble with it mixing it this way, so I never did make it around to trying it the other way.
Good luck with your experimenting!
