I have one of the WSP silicone molds that is just slightly larger than that, - 25.2 ounces fills it perfectly.

Ok, so i calculated my molds using the formula and it's way under. After playing around i found that a multiple of .6 is more accurate and also seemingly what the summerbeemeadow site is using when calculating batches to fit molds.

Not real sure why but the.6 is working for me today.

 If you use .6, you will have leftover. Just sayin'.

I'm not so sure about that. I just made a batch based on the .4 calculation and have a lot of extra room in my mold. Thinking that the error was on my end i jumped over to summerbeemeadow to see what they would come up with and their calculations were different (based on .6).

Here was the calculation i did: 1.25 in height x 8 in length x 2 in width = 20 x .4 = 8 oz. (yes, it's a very small tester mold) would this be correct or did i do it wrong? the mold will actually hold closer to 12 oz i believe.

Thanks all!
Erin

You're measuring the oils. Did you remember to account for the water also?

I did my normal recipe through the summer bee lye calculator and then recalcuated the size for my mold the result was 30.93oz when i used the 0.4 formula I got 20.475. But I was thinking the difference might be weight vs volume. It might hold 20.475oz but those oz might weigh 30.93. What do yall think? Does that make sense?

O.K. - Keep in mind this formula is an estimate, and does not consider the lye and water. It also does not account for the fact that different oils of the same weight can take up different ammounts of volume. The recipes I use with the water discount I use are spot on using this formula - your results may vary.
I was basing my responses based on the fact thaty you stated that you did not want to have any leftover after filling your mold. I apologize if I steered you wrong.

In a few blog posts ago, Anne-Marie mentioned how she calculated the soap she needed for a mold. I'm not sure which post it is but I know it was a CP tutorial (maybe 3 wks ago) but she said to calculate w x h x l x .55
She said for the height measurement to put how tall you want your soap to be. So if it's 2 inches that's what you put in.
Hopefully she or Bramble Momma can chime in and clarify :)

aha! I found it..it was from this SQ post http://soap-queen.blogspot.com/2011/01/ ... twist.html

Tip: You don't need to invest in expensive molds to start making soap! We just used a sturdy cardboard box and lined it with freezer paper. To figure out how much soap your mold will hold, use this formula: Length x width x height x .55 = approximate soap in ounces. When calculating your height you don't want to fill your box all the way to the top - so just put in the height you want your soap to be.

I've used diaper wipe containers, fruit cup containers (Pretty single soaps for CP or M&P), microwave safe bread pan, 1# containers from deli salads (these are perfect for 3 nice sized bars) - all kinds of things. My very first "real" loaf mold arrived this afternoon.
