I first started making soap from recipes my Mom gave me years ago. She was a farm girl and made most of her soap from lard. If you have reservations about using lard then this isn’t for you.

On the other hand if you use lard in combination with other inexpensive oils such as Olive oil, coconut oil you can make soap that is really cheap and after it cures is as hard as granite…and is long lasting. You can use 70 to 80 percent lard, and then balance the rest between OO to make is skin friendly, Coconut oil and just a little Castor (5 %) to make it bubbly and lather like crazy…It will be nice and white to, without adding any chemicals to it..

I like the Anne-maries shea butter soap recipe which is given at the opening page of this forum. I also like Kathy Millers Soap Classic

As far as lard goes, the cheap grocery store stuff has preservatives (which is what I use for soap and it works fine). You can get the good stuff that is preservative-free, but you will have to look for it and pay for it. For baking, I get a tub of the "good stuff"--no preservatives, from the kidneys (leaf lard), but I have to wait for when I visit my friend in rural mid-America who has a local meat market. The only source I've found in the city is organic pig farmers from the surrounding area who charge an arm and a leg for their lard.

Oh, what a shame that you can't get your meat processor to save the lard for you, because the fat from the kidneys and back makes a very high quality lard. I am surprised that you can't get them to save the fat from those areas and then render it yourself. What a waste! Grocery store lard is made from the fat from the pig's intestines. So, the flavor is very strong, whereas leaf lard (from kidney fat) is milder and works better for things like pie crust. Can't beat a pie crust made from good quality lard!

I thought that slaughter houses sold their fat to rendering plants and that is where lard and tallow come from. Also the hides and meat byproducts get sold. And the bones get used in fertilizer. If not they must pay to dispose of it.
