Try an apple cider vinegar or white vinegar rinse after you use the shampoo bar - 2 tablespoons to 2 cups water, pour over your head, then rinse well. Some don't rinse. Either way, the vinegar smell doesn't linger. If you have hard water, the soap may leave a film on your hair, so the ACV rinse helps remove that. As far as the no shampoo method - check out www.naturallycurly.com for an abundance of information. Although this site is geared towards those with wavy/curly hair, even those with straight hair may benefit from dropping harsh sulfate shampoos from their hair care routine for the very same reasons that using homemade natural soap is superior to detergent soap. Wikipedia has an article called, "How to follow the Curly Girl Method" which summarizes the no-poo/conditioner wash routine, as well.

Boy, I'm about to be such a wet blanket.

I do have wavy/curly hair. My hair still hates shampoo bars. I also tried the vinegar rinse, which helped a bit, but not enough to go out in public without a hat. And I tried the no-poo method, using just conditioner with the baking soda paste periodically, and it turned my hair into the worst greasy nasty matted mess i've ever seen.

to be fair to all of those methods, i have godawful hair to start with, so it doesn't take much to push it over the edge into disaster.

Okay, I know I am a little late to the party here, have not really been on for a couple months. But I find that some of the beer bars I make make my hair look and feel great. Though I do have to use a beed soap with mango butter in it, I used the stuff that I had not and it did make my hair very odd, and I did not like it. But with Mango butter, its all good! I do tend to be on the oily side, and it helps that out real good! Now not all hair types do well with bar soaps it seems, my sister who has wavy ( mine is straight as a broad) and is not as oily and she I think she used the non mango butter one and it made her hair very odd as well.

I kept reading articles about people using castile soap for their hair as a SLS-free/natural alternative. Trust me on this one- don't do it! It was tough the first week while my hair "detoxed" and became even more unmanageable as time went on. I decided instead of giving in to regular shampoo I would just go organic...and I gotta say my hair has never been this nice in my entire life. I use YTC (yes to carrots) shampoo and conditioner (found it at Target) and holy guacamole I am in heaven! It's a bit pricey but I only wash my hair every other day so it'll last a while.

Slightly OT on YTC and just my 2 cents on the subject.

I have seen these at the drugstore. They do have IPM and IPP that are way too high up on the ingredient lists for me to consider them. Those 2 can be pore clogging, even on your scalp. In products that contain carrot juice (as they have it listed in many of their items) I would not use it, unless it had proper preservatives; which they don't. For carrot juice, I want a powerful, well tested and effective preservative (or even a blend of preservatives) for that kind of easily spoiled ingredient in a product. They have good ingredients listed, but those would just go down the drain before they could actually do much for you. Quality ingredients are too far down their list, puffed up with lots of extracts. Extracts are harder to preserve; so is natural sugar from carrots. You could find many other quality products that are better than that line, including some of the talented people here.
