Lard, manteca in Spanish, is very cheap in stores catering to the Hispanic community around here. Usually I find its the Armour brand. And I can get it in 7 lb. tubs!

I am running out of palm oil from my first big soaping supply order, so I am very pleased to read the comments here noting lard is a good substitute. Once I run out of palm and coconut oil, I am only going to soap with ingredients I can easily purchase locally, such as olive oil and lard.
