If I'm using a very yellow formula, I'll sometimes add some TD straight up to the whole batch to lighten it up a bit so I have a more reasonable place to start. Not going for a bright white, just a lighter starting point so it's not so difficult to overcome the yellow issue. If you don't want to use TD, white kaolin can sometimes help too unless you're using deeply colored oils like EVOO.

Here is a soap I made today. I used Ultramarine Violet to make a light purple color. I am disappointed as usual. I used a 1/4 tsp of the colorant to 2 Tbsp of olive oil. It mixed great and made a pretty purple oil. I added that to half the batter (Olive, lard, apricot, coconut, and coco butter). I added 1 Tbls of colored oil to the batter and it made no difference. I added another Tbsp and then another and it ended up with barley a grey shade.

I am so frustrated with the oxides and clays! I am affraid to use too much and have it bleed in the shower like some of my old soaps with dark lab colors, yet the flip side is oxides that don't show! :x

File comment: 1/4 tsp of ultramarine violet to 2Tbsp of olive oil and the blah color it made in batter.

I no longer use ultramarine violet. It has turned gray in my soap. I use LabColors from BrambleBerry.

I'm looking for some advice about liquid dyes.My husband bought me some for Christmas but I've only ever used micas. This thread was great to read again but has thrown up some queries.can anyone explain to me when I use micas I use part of the oils in my batch but if I use the liquid dyes I'm technically adding water to my batch how does this affect the soap? . I'm worried I won't know how much water I'm adding. I was thinking of making some soap and testing the colours to see how they looked. Is this the best way to learn or is there a better way ?

I tried the liquid dyes for the first time and it was a disaster. It was as if it was just water and no dye but I'm not sure where I went wrong. Does anyone have any ideas I hate to waste the dyes.
Thanks Monica
