Using soap, whether on dogs or humans, does change the pH of the skin.

The difference is, the pH for human skin returns to normal in just a few minutes.

As I understand it, it can take hours for a dog's skin to return to normal pH after using soap.

So I cast my vote for the syndet (that's synthetic detergent, by the way!) shampoo for dogs as well.

When you go to it, you usually will put what type of measurement (pounds, ounces, grams) and how many total you want. Then you put in the water %. Put in the fragrance %. Put in the superfat %. Then the oils and how many ounces or what % you want of them. Hit calculate. Then print it out. This is approximately correct because each one is a little bit different. You'll figure it out.

I might have 6000 bars under my belt, but I learn something new all the time.

The first time I tried to use soapcalc I got frustrated. It helps a ton if you read the instructions!!!! Once I did that it was pretty easy to figure out and it really helps you figure out what each ingredient in your recipe adds. Have fun!!!

Welcome to the forum! It will help tons if you learn to use SoapCalc but so will reading up on soap amking. A good place to start is this forum and Alicia Grosso's book, Everything Soap Making. Have fun!
