In my recent travels I obtained some soap while in New Zealand. I tried to grab a novelty bar from each place visited. The claim to fame of this soap is that it is made from vocanic sulphur ashe and has healing properties. I wrote a tread here some months ago of soap I found in a Cracker Barrel that made some pretty significant health claims on the packaging. I realize that New Zealand doesn't have the FDA breathing down their necks for truth on labels but this stuff advertises cures for athletes foot, roseacea, psoriasis, acne, poison ivy and other things. Sadly no Dave, it does not cure stupidity (or I'd use it daily). Of course this is all due to the sulphur content in the soap. I've studied WWII extensively and know that American troops in the field used sulphuric soaps and powders (so did the Italians, Germans, Greeks and others) to treat open wounds. It has antibacterial properties and also will aid blood clotting.

Has anyone here ever experimented with making sulphur soap? Please speak up even if you haven't. I see dozens of people read the treads and only a small percentage actually reply. Your thoughts, though you may think are inconsequential, benefit everyone here so please voice your experience or opinions. Yes Celeste, this means you also as I know you lurk here but are intimidated to write. You are an excellent soapmaker and have valuable experience to share....as do many other here so please be heard.

Thanks.

I haven't made soap with it, but growing up in Czech Republic our family went to a sulphur springs spa almost every year. My grandmother swore it helped her arthritis. I had a hard time getting past the smell.

hey supermansoaps. I never tried it but saw it for sale at a beach shop over the summer when I went to the coast with my sister and friends. I agree with soapbuddy that the rotting eggs smell would be yucky and I would not care how good it was for you. Since I am thinking this and I no your reading it please give me your email again bc I lost it. Sorry I can not help with the sulfer soap.

Well Dave, 2001, sulfur can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. A friend using a brand name shampoo that had a sulfur ingredient broke out into a rash much like heat rash. She might just be the exception.

Years ago I had trouble drinking water in Corpus Christi Texas because of the sulfur smell. In fact I couldln't use the ice cubes either!

Let us know what you come up with!

I don't know about using it in soap, but in FL there are a lot of ponds fed by artesian wells that have sulphur water and while they smell awful, they do make your skin feel nice after swimming in them. Much nicer than the ocean! Truth be told, after a while you hardly notice the smell. LOL

I'm confused Mella. Who is Dave 2001?

The general consensus is that it is good for your skin...if you can get past the smell. I opened the bar of sulphur soap after writing this thread and it smells like a BB fragrance called "soapy clean" that I used, once. I tried the soap for hand-washing and it performed quite well and left my skin feeling normal. Not dry or overly moisturized. While I think it's a novel idea, the soap isn't quire ready for a debut here yet. Thanks everyone for your input.

the truth about sulfer... it is extensive. It is the brimstone (as in fire and brimstone) burns blue, turns red! Has more uses than I ever will remember... fertilizer, antibiotics (and yes I have seen some allergic reactions), there is a form in epsom salts etc. Would I use it in soap... maybe for myself, but since we cannot make medical claims without going into the area watched by government and for fear of allergies I would be a little careful. I don't think all forms smell, unless you are going to burn the soap :?:

Couple years ago I was a big fan of sulfur clay mask, it worked really well on my oily acne prone skin. Don't remember why I don't use it anymore, probably has something to do with the price... This topic also reminds me of my Japanese friend who loves to soak in natural hot spring. And when going to a hot spring is not an option, she buys these prepacked bath soak pouches that contains natural spring sulfur and soaks in her own tub. She gave me some years ago to try, and I have to say it didn't smell too good... but it did make my skin really smooth afterward. I don't know about making soap with sulfur, but I would be interested in making bath bomb or bath soak with sulfur! Anyone done it before?

I made a sulfur soap once. It smelled AWFUL, I ended up throwing all but 2 bars away, my house smelled so bad! lol. I will give it another shot though because I am curious to see if the benefits of the sulfur will come through in the soap.

I obtained some 100% USP sulphur powder from the lab and plan on making some before the games on Sunday. I have never worked with sulphur before but the smell of the powder was not as volatile as I expected. Plan to use the standard recipe and start with 1 tbs PPO and see what happens. I board horses at my stables and spoke to an owner who lived in Japan for a period of time with her parents. She said she would use sulphur soap to bathe their horses to expedite healing of body scratches and hoof infections. I'll let you know how it turns out after I unmold.

I used to play for the Chicago Bears and still have a very strong connection to the club. I would appreciate support of the Bears tomorrow if your team isn't Seattle. And no, Midnightstorm; I doubt they'll hit any home runs. The line on the game as of right now is Bears + 6.5 points but that will change repeatedly up until kickoff....just in case you want to bet on the game. Again, I and they would appreciate your support. Thanks.

I expect I'll be home tomorrow. You can add my vote for the Chicago Bears. I grew up there, but haven't been back in a long time.

In celebration of Chicago's victory, I stayed up late last night after watching the Jets dominate the Patsies, and made a batch of Sulfer Soap. What in the world was I thinking? This is the most vile creation that has ever come forth from my evil soap lab. About midnight, and during a tremendous lightning storm, I unmolded the bars and put them in the curing room which is on the 3rd floor in a guest room we don't use (not because we don't like guests......ok, we don't like guests). It doesn't look bad but the smell is horrific. My lovely wife woke me at 6 am when it was time to feed the horses and told me before I do anything, I need to go upstairs and find the sewer leak. I knew in my heart that it wasn't the sewer she was smelling (we have a septic system anyway). When I walked into the soap curing room I almost puked on my own shoes. Needless to say, the soap is now curing in an outdoor shed where we keep various insundry pitchforks, shovels and torches in case Frankenstein decides to escape and tries to throw me in the well. I have absolutely no idea what to do with this evil and vile creation except send it to Dr. Frankenstein who lives down the street to use on the monsters he creates. Goodness knows I have just created my own monster with this soap. I have a feeling that when archeologists are unearthing my back yard in the year 5623, they too will puke on their own shoes when they open the door to my outdoor shed because I'm not touching that stuff again unless my life depends on it.

LOL, I told you! I had the powder version too which seems so innocent in the container. The second it comes in contact with liquid the beast is released. I did end up throwing all but two bars away because the whole batch was too much to handle in the house. The scent actually HAS dissipated after about four months (no, i'm not kidding) but I am thinking that once that baby hits water it will get stinky all over again......there has got to be a way to incorporate sulfur into soap.......what color is the soap you bought in NZ out of curiosity? Mine turned this awful brown color, i did the sulfur at 5% of the total recipe.

......so....Jets and Steelers huh? Steelers are my team and Pittsburgh my hometown!!!! GO Black and Gold! YAY!
