Last Wed I bought a commercial bar of solid olive oil soap, unscented, to see if my cat's stuffiness would improve with all scents put away (it didn't)

First off, it smells kind of like clay. Is this normal for an unscented OO bar?

Then, it was HUGE! 8 oz I think. It's been a week now with two of us using it and I'd say it's about down to the size of a normal bar of soap. Which fits in my hands much better but it seems like it is going away pretty quick. I'd be surprised if we have much left in another week.

Kiss My Face. It was the only unscented bar in that store

If my memory serves me correctly, I posted the ingredients here on the forum somewhere. The ingredient list included a fragrance.

But the OO has some sort of smell. To me it's like clay, but it doesn't make me smell like that.

How about the fact it seems to be disappearing quickly?

They use sodium olivate, which is pre-made soap (shreds or noodles), which could have something else added. They don't list lye on their label.

Irene, did you find that on the unscented bar? My bar label just had the three ingredients Linda listed. You're right about the lye, that wasn't on there.

Ah! Which is different then what their website states. I thought Sodium Olivate was a fancy way of saying Olive Oil!

sodium olivate is just the INCI name for saponified olive oil, or castille soap.
So, we have sodium palmate, sodium cocoate, sodium tallowate, and so forth.
It seems that the commercial bar was made from extruded noodles of olivate as Irena noted.
I've been thinking for some time that it should be easily possible to produce CP soap to have exactly the desired combination of characteristics by not using natural oils that contain a mix of fatty acids, but by mixing the pure fatty acids in correct proportion and then doing CP as normal.
EG
33% oleic acid
33% palmitic acid
15% linoleic acid
15% stearic acid
and I would try it, except that I can't find all those individual fatty acids.

The term saponified means they used lye somewhere.

Look like lab reagents for research. Probably cost about $1000 a gram! But never mind. Thanks for the link :P
