I noticed that my very first soap, made 3 months ago, has cured in such a way that the sides are now concave - no longer flat. Not that I care about how this affects the soap's performance, but want to understand why it would happen with one batch and not the batch made the day after.

The recipe:

Olive Oil 655 grams
Coconut Oil 281 grams
Water 355 grams (38% weight of oils)
Lye 133 grams (27.25% concentration)

I don't recall ever buying a handmade soap shaped this way. Is it normal and bars of soap are planed/finished before they are packaged for sale? Or is it the high olive oil content in combination with the water amount?

I think that has more to do with the heat from gelling. It has happened to me before. You could plane it off if you don't like it.

Could it be too much liquid evaporating out? You could try the same recipe with a bit less water and see if that helps.

The 38% water was the reason. I never use that much or I get concave bars after curing.
