Teach Soap

Just wondering does lye have to mixed in glass? i ask because I just read a recipe were it said you can use a glass or plastic measuring cup, I would think you would have to use glass because it can get so hot?

for making the lye solution, I use a plastic pitcher with a #5 on the bottom of it.

Plastic or stainless steel.

I agree, don't use glass. Lye can etch tiny cracks into glass and one day it may just decide to shatter, spraying you and your area with glass shards and caustic lye. I use a heavy-duty plastic pitcher that I picked up at the dollar store. It's polypropylene (look on the bottom for the number "5" and the letters "PP"; that's the recycling code for polypropylene). Never had a problem with it melting or warping. Stainless steel is also safe to use.

WOW...I think i have read and watched everything about CP soaping and not once did I ever see that mentioned anywhere! Thanks so much...I wonder why with all they tell you about safety,why wouldn't they mention that AND the recipe i just used said use a glass or plastic measuring cup?

I think it's probably because that's what people had on hand to use all the time to mix and measure stuff, so they just kept using it. But, now we know better, thank goodness!

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I use plastic paint buckets of varying sizes that I bought at a hardware store for anywhere from one to three dollars. They are affordable and hold up very well. Got this idea from seeing Amanda at Lovin Soap using them.
