Teach Soap

I am a beginner CP soaper, and have been experimenting with different ingredients. It seems like Sodium Lactate is a winner of an ingredient - hardens soap, is anti-bacterial, prevents cracking...etc. Why is this product not used more often? I've heard of it being recommended for use with soft molds to ease the release, however, I would think it would be very useful all around to make a harder, longer lasting soap.

Is there any drawback to this product? I just don't see it listed on ingredients very often - in fact, almost not at all.

I've actually found sodium lactate in my cp, makes it crack and get crumbly. It does make it harder, but so do the right combination of oils & a good cure. As for anti-bacterial, I've never heard that. I consider all soap antibacterial.

In HP it seems to help a lot better.

I use sodium chloride (salt ) in my soaps, does seem to help, is cheap and I have had no problem with cracking. --- gremlins do not listen to this!!!!!

Sodium lactate is not an anti-bacterial. I use it for every batch since I don't gel. I don't have problems with cracking.

I made a batch on, um... Sunday I think. With sodium lactate, and it did gel (it tried to overheat!). It is still in the mold because I have no cutter! Kind of expecting it to be a brick. Picking up a cheese cutter tomorrow, will see how it goes!
