Teach Soap

I decided to do my first attempt at goat milk soap.

I froze pasteurized goats milk, and decided to go with a 100% castile base.

My lye mixture came to about 80 degrees, so I mixed the two at this temperature. It took a very long time to hit trace. Probably because of the cooler temperatures.

I'm not sure if this was too cold or not. But it still seemed to have reacted, just much slower as chemistry would expect at lower temperatures.

What can I expect from this recipe?

What should I look out for since it was made using goat milk?

Any words of caution?


Pictures... after unmolding, I'm waiting 48h for this one.

Did it reach true trace? Did you use a stick blender? Did it gel? Castile does take longer to reach trace.

Goat milk soap can smell funny at first. Don't be put off--it goes away. You didn't use any scent or color, right?

My one attempt at true castile stayed very soft for two days. I ended up hot processing it, and then it broke up a bit when I cut it. I saved a few pieces, and now a few months later, it's a fine soap, though not pretty.

Kat, with or without goats milk, you will need to let this one sit on the curing rack for awhile... like at least 3 months... even longer would be better. If you are anxious to try it.... after two months take one bar cut it into 4ths and use one section each month... then you can test for yourself when castille is the best.

ooh interesting.

Actually with this recipe, I had some left over, and made a bunch of guest sized soaps. So that should make the testing go easier.

Interesting to know about the long curing process is though. I'd like to know about the chemistry.
