OK- I want to get a infrared thermometer for making CP soap, but my hubby thinks it's not as reliable as a food thermometer because it only measures the surface temp. For those who have been doing this a while, what is your preference, if you have one?

I have the infrared that I use for lotions. I like the fact the it doesn't touch my product, unlike a conventional thermometer. I use it after I stir.

I have two of them, a small one and then got a larger one from harbor freight. I love it! I also stir before I check the temp. Your food thermometer can also be off if it is left in one area and the liquid is not stirred or if it rests against the edge of the container. I had two of them and occ they would fall into the liquid oils. I had a large one for my lye but found I had to lift it out of the liquid to read it. My lye container is quite deep and it was not digital. This one works great for me. I know there are many soapers who do not check the temp of the soap, but I am too compulsive not to.

Mine is from Harbour Freight as well. I love it. It's so easy to use and no clean up.

So I marched into Harbor Freight and all they had was a mini pocket infrared thermometer. Luckily, I was able to find one for cheaper at Home Depot AND got to use my HF coupon

Oh, and hubby? While I was doing my prep work, he was busy having fun with the new "toy" all over the house. I think I may have to hide it :lol:
