Teach Soap

I use coconut oil 92 (hydrogenated) and soapcalc gives the same values for that as for 76 degree.
However soapcalc gives different values for hydrogenated and nonhydrogenated soya oil.
This doesn't seem correct?

I noticed that too since that's what I use. If the soap calc has 92 degree that what I use. If it doesn't, I use the regular. I haven't noticed any difference.

I can help again! Hydrogenated oils and fats are those that are flooded with hydrogen to make them smoother or creamier. Basically a non-hydrogenated fat is built of long kinked chains of fatty acids, when you force hydrogen atoms on to them (hydrogenation) those chains become straight. It completely changes them chemical composition of the fat. This is why soapcalc etc have 2 different sets of info for the same oil; 1 is for the base oil with its nice unsaturated fatty acid chains, and 1 is for the new hydrogen loaded saturated fatty acid chains. [This is how they make creamy peanut butter out of natural peanut butter, as an example, the saturated fats make for a much more pleasant texture and no separation, though they are really not good for your body! Hydrogenated = baaaadddd]

Hydrogenated oil should make a harder bar as the straighter fatty acid "tails" form more or less a woven pattern while the kinked unsaturated fatty acid tails make more of a cheesecloth, irregularly woven pattern. The saturated fatty acids would be less hydrating though. This is why a good mixture of saturated and unsaturated oils makes the best soap!
