Teach Soap

I tried a natural powder (madder root powder) using an infusion method, plus I have used an oxide powder. I found that the infusion didn't work and the oxide powder is actually bleeding colour whilst washing! I'm ok with that, it washes off, but if I were to ever go ahead and try selling soap, I'm guessing many customers would not like that.

What methods of colouring do you use? What do you find bleeds colour and what do you find is perfect for colouring?

I use oxides, ultramarines and micas. None of these bleed for me, unless I use too much. I also use FD&C colorants, but I don't think those are available outside of the US.

Thanks Irena. Perhaps I used too much oxide powder in my batch. I only used about 1/2 tspn for my 1kg batch. There were spots in it though (which I enquired about in another thread) of undispersed colour or fragrance. Perhaps these undispersed bits are the problem?

You're welcome. Undispersed bits can be a problem. For swirling, I would use a bit of glycerin and use a mini coffee frother to mix. If you are using it in the whole batch, add it right to your oils and stick blend well before adding lye. I use 1/2 tsp for about a 2 kg. batch.

Thanks again Irena! I haven't even ventured into swirling or even layering. I think I'll wait til I get my single colours spot on before I dabble in those. I did mix the oxide with a small amount of oil before mixing it in, but again, it didn't mix properly or I wouldn't have had the spots. I'll keep trying though!
