Teach Soap

I tried searching Zap Test, but it gave pages and pages and pages of people using the zap test. However, is there a good explanation of how to do it? When people talk about it, all I imagine is licking a side of a bar of soap, which sounds pretty unappealing to me (mouth washed out with soap, on purpose?). Is there a way to do it? I keep reading everyone prefers to do this compared to getting the pH strips. I'm still pretty new, have only done a few CP batches. One I just unmolded, another that has been curing for a few weeks and I'd like to test them.

Not to sound so stupid, but any help or a good explanation would be great, so I'm not sitting here slobbering all over my soap bars

Well I actually touch my tongue to a small portion of the soap, from the soap pot, or later with a sliver from the loaf. I say small spot because if your soap is lye heavy or in my vocabulary hot, you will feel the zap and it isn't pleasant.

Others wet their finger and run it over the soap and touch their finger to the tip of their tongue. Zap is hard to explain but if you feel it you will know why it is called ZAP. Like someone snapped your tongue with a rubber band.

Others will have other means of testing for zap.

Well im sure glad someone asked that question. I have wanted to know that my self, and all i could think of is licking a bar of soap, hmmmm it has been a long time since i have had soap in mouth. I very new to this and dont understand it all but it sure sound like a lot of fun..

When I was a kid I liked touching my tongue to a 9-volt battery for that shocky feeling. I had a batch zap on me once (it was fine after a day or two cure time) and it felt just like that. Believe me, you'll know!

Thank you so much! I know the 9-volt battery feeling so I'll look for that. Thanks for the process, I've tested my two batches using this and didn't get a zap. Kind of a gross after taste, but no zap

You're welcome! After that zappy soap I had I'm really wince-y about licking my soap now. (And I only lick the bit I'm going to keep, hahahaha!) So far so good!

I zap tested my "Beer-Bacon" soap.......no zap, but I was very disappointed in the flavor.

One more question, when do you usually test your soap? I made one last night so it's only about 18 hours old. I'm leaving it in the mold 24 hours, but I have the bowl to clean. I tested a little of it (to see if I would feel the zap, and most definitely got the zap and I know the feeling now.

Would 48 hours be a good time to test? The other soaps I tested had been out for a couple of days and I got no zap from them.
