I was wondering if this was a normal practice for you sellers out there. I have seen some that do and some that don't but if you do when do you actually send it to the buyer? I don't think as a buyer that I would like to have something sitting around for 3 or 4 weeks before I can use it. Just wanted your thoughts on the subject. Thanks!

I would not want to be the SELLER that shipped an uncured or partially cured soap to a customer who then uses it right away as they should expect to and end up being sued for a rash or reaction from the LYE witch has not fully saponified with the oils. JMO :D

Soap should not have any lye left after it's saponified. For hot process, soap is safe to use right away. It just won't last as long in the shower. For cold process that has gelled, soap is safe to use after one week, but it won't be as mild as soap that has fully cured. I ship my wholesale soaps after 2 weeks and retail bars after 4 weeks.

I was having a look at someone's site this afternoon at a soap they've just done and they've got it up for sale already. In the description it has a cure date and for when the soap will be ready. IMO, and as a customer, I dislike this. You're right - I don't want to wait around for a soap to cure and to wait to use something. I can understand why people do it, but if I was a seller, I'd rather just build hype about my soap through blogs and make people wait :) but then, I'm really interested in marketing :P

But SB doesn't saponification in CP soap take several weeks to thoroughly saponify, and if a person were to use a soap that was not completely finished ,isn't there a chance of it being very harsh? Or making you itch?

Thanks for your input ladies! I did do some snooping around on line and it seems to be a normal practice for many sellers. They put the cure date on the label and say to let it breathe. I don't know it just seems strange to me. I wanted to know if I was the only one who felt this way! Its hard enough for me to wait for my own soap that I made, I can't imagine paying for it and still having to wait for weeks. :(

   If saponification takes place over the whole life of the bar, that would be some dang harsh bar!

If I was selling I would be concerned that someone would use too early, the soap would feel drying to them and then they would think the soap was "not good" which would mean a soap maker would loose that customer and maybe others just by word of mouth. Not to mention that this could reflect on other homemade soap makers as too what our soap really is like! IMO it is better to try to hold us to a higer standard.

Ok so let me understand this, CP soap is not still semi caustic after say 24 hours ,but it is more HARSH?
:D And because it is not cooked likeHP ,therefore it needs to cure for several weeks to evaporate out any water? Is ther a hybrid method of partial cook and then a pour, like bringing soap in a heated crock to a thick trace and then pouring it into a mold ,unmolding at the proper time ,cutting and letting it cure?

Whether CP or HP, soap after 24 hours will not be more harsh. With HP, that saponification is complete sooner, so technically, HP soap is fine to use after the cook, but it becomes milder as it cures. With HP, curing of two weeks is fine. If you can wait longer even better.

With that said, I prefer not to gel. My soap can zap, up to three days later. That's because the saponification is slowed down. It will take longer for the oils and lye to react with each other.
