So I want to add Walnut Shell to a facial bar, but I have no idea how much I should add. Is there any good way to determine how much of this I should add? Like what's a good range to make it subtle versus gritty? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks as always!

I find walnut shells too scratchy for the facial area. They can create micro-tears in the skin. A better choice would be just oils mixed with sugar.

The ones in your link should be okay, they are ground up super fine. I would use a facial scrub though rather than a bar. The same exfoliant in a bar can feel more scratchy than in a scrub.

I love ground walnut shells as a colorant too. Any exfoliant can create micro-tears--that's the idea. Ground into a very fine powder, it is not scratchy at all.

Sorry to burst your bubble here, folks, but ANY exfoliant can cause micro-tears. When one uses a sugar or salt scrub, micro-tears are occuring. Whether or not it washes off has nothing to do with it.

What kind of sugar would be best for a facial scrub? Castor suger

I don't know about others, but I wouldn't use sugar on my face. I use a genuine (100% olive oil) castile with activated charcoal and silk protein powder on my face.

I make a lot of sugar scrubs and I do use them on my face too. From what I've read, the structure of the sugar crystals are much less likely to cause scratching although anything can scratch. While salt scrubs are something I never make as the structure of the salt crystals are much more likely to scratch. Sugar is also a great antioxidant for skin. Much healthier use on the outside of us than the inside.

If you want a less abrasive sugar scrub, you can put the sugar in a food processer and pulse a bit but be cautious that it doesn't turn into powdered sugar. It will do that quickly! Wait until all the sugar dust has settled before removing the cover.

I'm definitely not an expert but in my option, there's nothing like a good sugar scrub with some shea butter in it to relieve my psoriasis.
