So I made a coffee soap a couple of months ago with fresh coffee grounds in it; I found them a bit TOO scrubby for my personal taste, although some of my testers have liked them that way. This past weekend I tried using already-used grounds, based on commentary here on the forum (at least I think it was here...). Soap got a bit too hot at gel stage and cracked, so I'm not sure if heat was a factor, but when I cut the soap, I was disturbed to find it looking like THIS:

Image

Gaaaah, eeeewwww!! XD The coffee grounds have "haloes", and on the outside edges of the soap, you can actually feel these bubbles as having expanded beyond the rest of the bar.

I pH-tested the soap and it came out to a nice normal 9~9.5, and I used a little bit to see how rough or not the grounds were; it feels fine, no weirdness of texture or oiliness or anything.

Here is my recipe, for reference. I did all my measurements in grams (thank you, soapcalc) but since I saved the weights as oz in my recipe spreadsheet...

16 oz batch, 7% superfat
4.8 oz (30%) 3x strength coffee (made from distilled water)
4.48 oz (28%) coconut oil
3.84 oz (24%) palm oil
2.4 oz (15%) olive oil
2.4 oz (15%) rice bran oil
1.6 oz (10%) cocoa butter
1.28 oz (8%) castor oil
2.216 oz lye
1 Tbsp used coffee grounds

I am wondering if the "haloes" are caused by residual water in the coffee grounds; if other are adding used coffee grounds to their soaps, is there a trick to it? :o Any thoughts?

The "haloes" are caused by residual water in the coffee grounds. It also looks like it overheated. Next time try preventing gel (or overheating) and see how you like it that way.

Maybe I'm crazy I know it didn't come out perfect, but I think it looks cool. I kinda like the halos and the texured look. :D

Thanks, soapbuddy, I will definitely try keeping this recipe cooler next time! I do wonder why it overheats -- no sugar or anything in particular that strikes me as "hot", unless it's something that coffee itself does... :(

KomfyKate, lol, it's kind of growing on me XD I was just really put off when I unmolded and cut it! But given that it's supposed to be a "serious cleaning" soap, maybe it doesn't have to win any beauty contests...

Soapbuddy, if the haloes are caused by residual water from the coffee grounds, they may disappear as the soap cures, right?

@ jenova - I kinda like the way it looks, too. 8)

XD I'm glad they have some appeal!

Now that they've had a few days to dry, there's less of a stark contrast between the "haloes" and the rest of the soap. The haloes are definitely a translucent space around each bit of coffee, which was why I suspected water... it's certainly an interesting effect. Actually it looks a bit like some kind of fruit or vegetable bread, IMO.. lol.

On the plus side, the stuff does seem to remove scents decently, but I need to run a couple different kinds of tests:
#1. This soap vs. at least one of my other, not-specifically-deodorizing soaps
#2. Test against some really strong odor (I've been testing it against perfume oil, since I've constantly trying to test different scents, lol). I suppose I should make something really garlicky.... for SCIENCE!

hi all,
yesterday, i've just made a batch of coffee soap with grounds...very strong brew.
i still yet to unmold it, but the soap kinda have an awlful smells. smells something like lye water (diluted type, for those who also make bakery).
is this a lye heavy? or is it because of the strong coffee brew?
during the lye mix into the coffee, the fumes smells exactly like the soap in mold.
decided to leave it in the mold for another day, i will take some pics once unmolded tomorrow. see how it looks like.

Hi ling :) Coffee soap does tend to smell REALLY bad for at least the first few days, something about the coffee and lye mixing together. When you cut it, you can check for zap if you're worried about too much lye, but you can generally expect it to stink for a while until it cures. Later it might not have much scent at all, since coffee tends to wipe out scents :)
