Teach Soap

Now, I've heard of DOS, but I have never actually seen DOS. I have a batch of chocolate scented soap that I made last week. I also made the colour brown. Tonight, while I was inspecting the batch, I noticed 3 of the bars have dark brown spots on them. Is it DOS or something else?

It's hard to tell from the picture, but I don't think that's DOS. It almost looks like some of your brown pigment may have clumped a bit.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Does it smell bad? If not just let it cure and watch to see if others develope spots. I sniff my soaps from time to time - so just keep a nose on it

I don't think that's DOS. It could be not incorporated color or fragrance.

Thanks for the responses. It smells amazing. There's no zap either, I tested that as soon as it came out of the mould. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

(Oh, and the pic seems to have changed size since I posted. It was enormous last night!)

That happened to me too in a recent batch of Frankincense and Myrrh CP I did. I added essential oils to mine, but i think what cause the spots was me not mixing in the fragrance oil well enough (it was a discoloring fragrance) and then it just tuned darker in a few areas. Hope this helps you figure out what went wrong!

Thanks Katie! It's good to know that it's probably just oil or colour that hasn't been mixed in properly. I've got so much soap from just 2 batches I'm going to have to start gifting it soon, as I have 2 more batches lined up over the coming weeks! At least I know I can gift this soap (albeit a bit 'spotty') and not worry that it's a DOS problem! Or something else!

Glad you are happy with them now. I think DOS is only if your oils were not fresh and/or when you soap gets old and you had a lot of excess oils in it. It should be fine. I make a wine soap with Juice Plus Powder that people love and it looks like it is loaded with DOS spots, but it is the powder from the Juice Plus.
