Teach Soap

Hi everyone, my name is Lara and I'm new to making soap and the teachsoap forum. I've been researching and creating soap for about 3-4 weeks and have already decided everyone's getting soap for christmas! I told my brother this and he asked if I could make him an anti-acne soap because he's not had much luck with products. I've googled it a bit but haven't really found anything overly useful so thought I'd ask in here - does anyone know of a recipe or can suggest some spot-biting ingredients? I know tea-tree is a good one but I also know some people find it to be an irritant and am not confident enough to play around with it yet. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I made this soap a couple of weeks ago you have to infuse your canola oil with the herbs. I put them in tea bags and poured the oil over them and heated it on low for 2 hours then turned it off and let it sit till it cooled down completely. Also the witch hazel makes it really steamy and stinky so make sure you are in a well ventilated area. I used a tea tree lavender combo essential oil instead of straight tea tree. Hi Lara (and welcome to soaping!),

Clay can be a nice additive for oily skin also (sea clay, kaolin clay, rhassoul clay, etc). I made this recipe about a month/month and a half ago and it's nice (though I find it gets a bit soft/mushy too fast in the shower due to no palm oil so you have to baby this bar a bit):

I would get yourself an aromatherapy book and study essential oils and their safety guidelines. Some essential oils are safe at only small %. Be aware that canola oil has a short shelf life and might be more prone to DOS. Tea will oxidize in soap making it brown. IMHO you won't get many therapeutic properties from tea as it will get eaten up by the lye.

I agree with Kari; clays can be nice in soap. If you haven't made soap before, I would start very simple. No color or scents till you know what trace looks like, what a finished bar feels like, differences between 4% superfat as opposed to 7% superfat (which is what I prefer). Any recipe you find always run it through a lye calculator. Mistakes, even written ones can happen.
