Teach Soap

I see statements like this all the time when I'm looking at the Bramble Berry fragrances:

This medium-flashpoint oil (162ºF) will ship FedEx only regardless of the shipping method you choose at checkout. It cannot be shipped by the USPS.

Does this mean that particular fragrance will cost more to ship than another fragrance with a higher or lower flashpoint? And does this statement mean that I should treat that particular fragrance differently when I add it to my soap?

It won't necessarily cost more. It just has to be shipped with a different courier that allows lower flashpoints. If you do HP soap with a low flashpoint FO, there is more of a chance that the fragrance will vaporize and dissappear.

What temperature is considered to be 'low'? I would think a low flashpoint fragrance might not be the best candidate for gelling in the oven, correct? Or will only a few notes of the fragrance 'burn off'? Or is it a case of the soap possibly gelling on its own anyway (without the oven) so it might just as well be put in the oven to gel? Or maybe I shouldn't use a low flashpoint fragrance for soap at all??

I think that the more experienced we become we will learn to take this into consideration. This may be one of the reasons why soapbuddy says she does not gel her soaps. The fragrance is stronger, because none is lost during the temps of gelling. (did I get that right soapbuddy?)

I was reading an article about soapmaking the other day (can't remember where) but the author was definitely against gelling. He/She said that the whole idea of gelling started on the internet and spread like wildfire. They stated that gelling was not only unnecessary, it was not advisable.

I guess it's like anything else - there are varying viewpoints about what's best.
