Sunday is the day that my wife & I visit the convalescent home near us. We usually take soap as gifts for the nurses and workers there while visiting some residents. Seniors are very dear to me and hold a wealth of knowledge if people would actually take the time to stop to listen to them. I call them cotton-tops which is an endearing term (although some of us don't think so).
We had a craft show Sunday morning and finished before heading to the convalescent home. Our soap company is set up as a 5013C (non profit) because we donate 100% of sales revenue. We purchase the supplies and make the soap. After sales, we deduct the booth fee and the rest goes to 1 of 3 different charities. We sold less than $150 worth of soap that day which is terrible. We were very disgusted.
Our last stop in the convalescent home is the Hospice ward….which is very difficult but also the most rewarding. One of the nurses we gave soap to asked us what we do with our "leftover soaps." We usually do what most of you do. We give them to friends, coworkers, relatives, etc. She suggested donating them to Hospice. It's a very simple way to put a smile, however slight, on someone's face. It's tax deductable and I guarantee it would make you feel great. You have my personal guarantee it will brighten your day. They'll even come to your place and pick it up. It couldn't be easier. Trust me, it's worth it. I'm guessing that the root word for Hospice is Hospitable. They have my respect.
