Teach Soap

Hi, I am new here. Well, I have been reading here for a while now, but have just now posted. I am wanting to start making my own soap. What I want is a very easy recipe that is kind of like Dove, or some kind like that, to start with. I have used and liked homemade soap that has goat's milk in it.

What is your easiest soap recipe like Dove soap, with or without goat's milk, for a beginner to start with? And please tell me everything that I will need. I may want it to have a nice smell also. Since I haven't ever made any, I don't know what I would like or not like. So, you can also give me an easy recipe even if it isn't what a asked for specifically.

Hi rvkv88 and welcome. It took me a little while to learn that soapers are like exotic chef's in that they carefully guard their recipes. Most have formulated recipes that they have developed and keep them closely guarded. Most of the fun in making soap is coming up with your own recipe. A good place to start is www.soapcalc.com . It will assist you in tailoring a recipe that it good for you. Most soapers start with 3 basic ingredients, know as the "holy trilogy" of soap which are: coconut oil, olive oil, and palm oil. A good "standard" recipe to try is: (or something close to this)

60% olive
20% coconut
20% palm

After a while you'll learn little tricks like putting a little sugar in your lye water will improve lather....and so will castor oil. A little salt will make a harder bar. More than 20% coconut will cause the soap to feel a little drying to the skin. If you haven't made soap before, I would suggest making soap with water first before trying to make goat's milk as there are some tricks to learn before soaping with milk.
