If they are shrink wrapped or heat sealed with too high of a heat they can have that funky smell.

I don't think the pkg was shrink wrap I have used that before, but it could have been. The seams looked to be overlapped and like glued cellephane, but there wasn't any evidence of a glue. Perhaps it is shrink wrap or some equivalent that was overheated. It really did smell funky. I changed them all out to food wrap. Thanks guys!

Well the question is still in the air! LOL Perhaps I have a super sensitive sniffer, but you would think I would knon that from earlier in my life.

I wrote the company to let them know I repackaged the soaps so that I could use them. Here is part of the company response;

"I use PVC shrinkwrap on my soaps, and wrap by hand (no machinery to impart any kind of a "lubricant" smell). The film protects the soap from dirt and moisture, and helps keep the scent from fading or mingling with other soap scents during storage and shipment..." I am glad to hear that the soaps seemed to be unaffected once the wrapping came off! :)
Can you detect the smell from the box your soaps were mailed in, or the the plastic bubble wrap that cushioned the package"?

It was definitly the packaging, not the box, not the bubble wrap, not fumes from the postman or delivery trucks, just the heavy duty cellephane type material that had the petrol smell.

Now I'm worried what to wrap my own creations in one day when I get some hatched! :lol:

"PVC is the most common and least expensive shrink wrap film on the market. It is commonly used for shrink wrapping CDs, DVDs, software and more. The film is durable, but brittle. It is great for individual product wrapping. If you are wrapping multiple products together or food, Polyolefin film is recommended".

Everywhere on the internet it claims this stuff doesn't have an odor, per manufacturers. I think it does carry a petrol/skunk like odor, and if it isn't food safe, then why would I want to put it on my soaps?

Any ideas here?

I stopped using PVC Shrink wrap...
1. Because of the burnt plastic smell...
2. Because it doesn't allow the soap to breathe
3. Because you can't smell the nice soapy fragrances through it.

When you hand someone home made soap they will 99.9% of the time put it right to their nose. If all they get is a burnt plastic smell it's a bit of a let down.

I now use perforated polyolefin shrink wrap which is 1000% better and solves all of the problems mentioned above.
Now I just need to get me one of those $300 cutter/sealer thingys.
