Teach Soap

This weekend, I tried out some red palm oil which I got at an African market. It was liquid (not semi solid) and I used about 4 oz of this in a 44 oz sunflower, olive and coconut blend.

Wow! The CPOP batch (which I mixed with lye solution that had hibiscus tea) came out pumpkin orange. Then I did a coconut milk and red palm blend (same recipe as above but using coconut milk instead of hibiscus tea) using the fridge/ungelled method and it came out velvetta orange. I call it "soap even a mother couldn't love."

Any thoughts about what I can add in future batches to change this color? I love the ingredients of the coconut milk and red palm but don't want to bathe in cheese.

Any thoughts?

Is there a difference in smell? I just had to ask, because you didn't mention that there was any difference in scent, just color.

The only way to avoid these colors is to sub the unrefined palm for something else. What else do you have available?

No other palm oil unless I order over the internet. . since I am just starting to do this alot, I should probably go ahead and take the plunge to buy the base oils along with my FOs but haven't done so yet. I know you don't use palm, Soapbuddy, but maybe someone else knows where to buy retail. File comment: Cheddar Soap

Go to Mother's Market, or Henry's, or some other health food store, and you can buy Spectrum shortening. It's palm oil, from sustainable sources, and it's white. I know there's a Mother's in Santa Ana, and they have a new Anaheim Hills store opening soon.

Good call! I will check that out tonight. I have a Whole Foods by me so I will try there first.

I have to say, though, that I shaved off some of the cheddar last night (yes, with a cheese wire cutter!) and it lathers outrageously! I guess I will need to come up with a summer sausage looking cheese now.

Actually, because of your post, I researched red palm oil, and was surprised by all the good stuff I read about it. If you're willing, I'd be happy to swap/buy a bar!
